With that home – the 83,200-square-foot, former Nets training facility on Murray Hill Parkway – comes the capacity for a lot more members.
A total of 20,000, to be precise.
Currently, some 200 people have “healthy living memberships” at the Y, said Ryan Donahue of West Milford, the new membership director. That means they can take a fitness class at the Y program center and swim at Rutherford High School.
When the $9 million renovation to the building is complete, they can do a lot more.
“The only thing left from the original building will be the NBA basketball courts, which are massive and in beautiful shape,” Donahue said. “Everything else is being renovated, or built new, around them.”
Starting this month, the Y is selling limited-time “founding memberships,” he added.
Those who join now pay a $1 joiner fee (as opposed to $90) and get a $250 credit they can use on any program from swim lessons to personal training to specialty classes.
“You don’t pay anything else until we open our doors,” Donahue said.
Memberships cost $20 per month for one youth up to age 12 all the way up to $70 per month for a family. For founding members, those prices are frozen for two years.
Donahue and his staff have been spreading the word at street fairs, concerts and other events in the Y’s coverage area.
The Y serves the Bergen County towns of Carlstadt, East Rutherford, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry, Lyndhurst, Maywood, Moonachie, North Arlington, Rutherford, Wallington and Wood-Ridge.
Up to this point in its history, the Y has forged relationships in the 21 communities it serves to host 350 programs at 50 satellite locations, according to Chief Operating Officer Joe Min.
The new facility will feature state-of-the-art equipment and group exercise classes, a strength-training and free weight room, cardio center, steam and sauna rooms, a wellness center with physical therapy and message, free health screenings and more.
The new facility also makes possible another 50 programs for youths, teens, adults and seniors. They include indoor rock climbing, healthy cooking demonstrations, and a New Americans Welcome Center.
Its Mara Family Day Care Center, sponsored by John Mara, CEO and co-owner of the New York Giants, will accommodate 24 infants and 100 children up to age 5.
